Jaguar LandRover cuts course authoring times by up to 90%

At the start of 2009, Jaguar LandRover set out to streamline its e-learning content development processes and to adopt a single authoring tool for all learning content across all markets. Mohive eLPS wasn't the only solution on JLR's short-list, but came out on top after a rigorous selection process.

JLR has found that when content creators use the Mohive solution they can cut authoring time by as much as 90 percent. JLR is now fast tracking roll-out and aims to have its entire UK and international course portfolio created on Mohive by the middle of 2010.

LINE Communications acts as a strategic advisor to JLR, and for content creation JLR works closely with a carefully selected group of global partners including, in the UK, Impetus, Lorien Connect and Semcon Informatics and, in the US, Mora Creative, OPT Online, GP Worldwide, Sutter Group and Pro-Active Learning.

Supporting the global roll-out

Mohive has been supporting this global roll-out by hosting workshops for JLR's content creation partners and, from what we're hearing, people are already experiencing how effectively our software platform enables the collaborative way of working that JLR demands.

So what kind of e-learning projects are JLR working on? The organisation's training and development operation serves a sales force of over 60,000 dealers working out of 2,500 dealerships in more than 150 countries worldwide. But while this global sales team may be disconnected by geography, language and culture, they are united in their need for speed.

Better equipped people sell more cars. Better equipped people fix cars better, they take care of customers better and they make more profitable dealers.

For example, when a competitor launches a new model, JLR's sales and support operations need to equip staff across the dealer network with the specific knowledge they need to sell effectively against new competition.

Or if an unexpected service issue arises on a JLR vehicle, then every technician must have access to the information required to fix it fast. Rapid e-learning can't cover every automotive training need, but for rapid-turnaround online sales support like this it's the ideal approach. Short, timely courses are also a better fit in a competitive sales environment where every hour spent away from the dealership is less time available for sales.

The content development business has grown to accept two basic delivery models for e-learning: on time, but wrong; or right, but late. What we really need at this juncture are the solutions to get things right first time.

JLR is no newcomer to e-learning. The organisation adopted e-learning when the approach was in its infancy and has passed through what some industry experts dub 'e-learning's difficult teenage years'. But with its new strategy JLR has a matured content creation process consistent with the principles that have made it's products 'best in class' the world over.

Five-day ambition

JLR has an ambition to be capable of developing quality e-learning courses within five days. Early data coming out of the training operation indicates that a development process that routinely took anything from five to twelve weeks is now taking as little as two weeks - getting ever closer to that that five-day target.

The JLR culture is one of 'responding fast' and 'remaining firmly on course'. Consistent with these principles, the learning and development team is creating and delivering content within weeks of project initiation and delivering relevant and tactical content to help keep the business on track.
